About Me: Your Guide Fred
Hi, I’m Fred, your dedicated Northwoods Wisconsin fishing guide.
Motivated by a pure love of the sport, fishing has been my passion for the last 20 years. I fell in love with fishing while living in Bozeman, MT, fishing for rainbows and brown trout on the fly.
I’m a very versatile angler. I have a lot of techniques and adjust to the conditions and the bite.
My favorite fish to target is the musky, but I’m happy to chase walleye, bass, pike, or panfish. Conditions will sometimes determine the best chance for success.
My Philosophy: Adapt to the Angler I’m Guiding
Not everyone wants to throw huge musky baits for 8+ hours. But if you do, then I’m right there with you, I can grind for muskies all day.
If that isn’t your pace, I’m very experienced in trolling for muskies as well. Trolling can be a great way to cover water and find the bite. And, in fall the sucker bite can be a great way to find big fish.
We’ll come up with a game plan that fits you, regardless of the fish we’re targeting.
The bottom line is, I pay a lot of attention to people on my boat. I really want to make sure you’re getting what you want out of the trip.
If you’re looking for more than I can offer, I’ll help point you in the direction of another guide that might better fit your goals.
Carefully Chosen Boat and Gear
My boat is a 16 ½ foot Alumacraft featuring Humminbird electronics and the newest Garmin LiveScope. It’s ready to fish all day with a 36-volt trolling motor.
The advantage of the smaller boat is access to some excellent lakes that have challenging launches. Most importantly, the boat is clean, well-rigged, safe, and reliable. It’s a 2017 boat powered by a 2018 Mercury 75 4 Stroke.
I provide rods and baits, but you’re welcome to bring your own gear if you prefer. I fish for muskies with Chaos Rods and Tranx reels. Walleye and spinning gear include Saint Croix and Elk River Rods.
Our Waters Require a Variety of Fishing Techniques
As an experienced Wisconsin fishing guide, I’ll suggest we use a variety of techniques based on the conditions. Multi-species techniques might include snap jigging, Lindy rigging, ripping jerk baits and crankbaits, drop shot, slip bobbers, live bait presentations, and more.
Musky-specific tactics may include rippin’ rubber, working glide baits, dive and rise baits, burning bucktails, and more.
Trolling can also be a great way to catch fish and take a break from casting. We’ll connect before your trip and come up with a game plan that works for you.
Catch and Release vs. Harvesting
I’m 100% catch and release for muskies.
The health of the fish and a safe release is the top priority. This is to promote sustainable fishing that preserves the delicate ecosystem of the lakes.
I do support you harvesting legal fish (panfish, walleye, pike) If we’re targeting walleye or panfish, you may keep your legal fish, but I do not offer a fish cleaning service.
Fishing Guide Service Area
I’ll be guiding from the St. Germain area to the Star Lake area. The lakes I target may change frequently as conditions change.
That being said, I definitely will take people on Big St. Germain, especially if they are staying at the cabin and it’s a casual, multi-species trip. If it’s a musky-specific trip, there’s a good chance we’d be targeting different lakes in the area, based on the fishing and conditions.
What to bring:

Rain gear
Sun protection
Bug repellent or head net (optional)

Reasonable expectations - if we're musky hunting, they call it the fish of 10,000 casts for a reason. They can be TOUGH to catch.
